I was allergic to hay when I was a kid and assume I still am. Will have any problems at a strawberry patch? If I take Benadryl before will it help?
How much hay is at a strawberry patch?
There is no "hay" at strawberry patches, only straw ;-). The difference is that hay is green and has timothy grass, alfalfa, clover, and other assorted grasses in it. Straw is the stem of the wheat plant and is yellow. If there is straw in this strawberry patch there is probably not a whole lot, it will not be in an enclosed area, and if there is any straw it should be dust free because it should have been put out at the end of last year.
Benadryl would probably be a good idea just incase depending on how bad your allergies are. Good Luck!
Reply:Right, what the person above me said, no hay, just straw.
I worked on a strawberry farm growing up, and there is quite a bit of straw involved, we put it on over the plants in the winter to keep them from freezing, then uncovered the plants in the spring and left the straw in the aisles between plants.
But, I have alergies, too, and believe me when I say I spent a lot of time in the strawberry patch, and I never had a problem with straw related allergies. The only thing would be dust on the straw, which isn't that big of a deal because you're not shaking the straw up so that the dust would be a problem, you're just walking on it.
But, if you're prone to spring allergies, being outside might agravate them a little, and yes, benadryl would help, but it will make you tired.
