We moved house in October, and I have been digging over the veg plot ready to set up planting come spring. In one marked off area is a strawberry plant (not a wild one as the leaves are quite large). Is there anything I should be doing to encourage it to produce fruit later on?
I have a strawberry plant in the garden ?
In a few years your garden will be completely overgrown with strawberry plants.
You wont get any strawberrys though the slugs will eat the lot.
Reply:trim the dead areas of the plant as this will stimulate new growth come springtime.
put the plant in a strawberry pot as this keeps it off the ground.
Reply:not at the moment ,when growth restarts in spring an application of a general purpose fertiliser will promote good growth.
Reply:Strawberry is a very hardy plant that will spread %26amp; take over your garden - you will probably have to keep it pruned back to the designated area.
A little top dressing with compost or a bit of watering with manure tea before flowering time would assist the plants, other than that it should only need a bit of water in dry periods.
Reply:Yes just cut off the dead bits. Also it wont take over as such if you cut off the eerrrrmmmm shoot things that come out the sides Ive done this and it has worked well, but you my wont to let some shoots grow as like Martha Z said there wont be enough fruit to make it worth while. Plus you can buy a net mess thing to stop the birds!
Reply:one plant isnt worth the effort. i have grown strawberries before and the ants got 1/3, the robins 1/3, and i got the other 1/3. and i had to do all the work.
Reply:here's a good web site with strawberry care, they say it more efficiently than I can in this space and with greater detail:
