Except for the first weeks in June it has not had fruit! It growing very strong, plenty of vines but no strawberries. What is wrong?
This year we bought strawberry plant from Maynard's. They said it will produce fruit all season long NOT?
Strawberry plants are a fickle business. First there are generally two types planted: June-bering and Ever-bering.
June-bering as the name implies give you a large crop of strawberries in June, the rest of the season it spends growing.
Ever-bering implies that it will produce berries through-out the season. Both true and misleading. They produce a heavy crop in June, then sporadically through out the season. By sporadically, I mean a few berries a week... in a garden plot.
When strawberries are grown commercially, only 1st and 2nd year plants are ever uses. Older plants are thrown out. Generally June-berers are used. Plants are kept in coolers to imitate winter... and are planted to stagger the harvest. As a homeowner, with a garden, I'd only recommend June-bering varieties... you'll have a better harvest.
Reply:All potted plants need fert. to do well as there is little soil to start with. So you need to ad fert. on a reg. basis.
Uuuum - chemically made produce !!!!
Even if they are in the ground they need lots of sun and the right amount of fertilizer. They also need warmth - cold = no fruit !
Try using something like miracle grow rose food since both flowers and fruits need high potassium content (they're both actually the same part of the plant - ovum) just follow the directions.
Next year try adding a little (just a little) Epsom salt (potassium chloride) to your mulch bed when you add your other nutrients a few weeks before planting
Reply:Dunno where you are, but "Strawberry Festival" season in Florida is before June, and it only lasts about a month before the 'season' is over.
When I lived in NC, the 'season' was only about a month... I think in May or June. When I went to a 'pick your own' place, I realized the value of slavery 'back in the day'.
The 'season' isn't all that long for strawberries, and if you only have a plant or two, you aren't gonna get many.
Reply:Its alright mine all died. Will just have to buy them from the grocery store.
Reply:It might be the type that you bought. Check out this link:
