How do you get crabgrass out of strawberry patch.?
Crabgrass is an annual weed germinating in April, setting seed in August, and dying with the first frost of fall. Preemergence herbicides prevent emergence of crabgrass plants. These products must be applied prior to crabgrass germination which could occur as early as April 1 in southern Indiana and three or more weeks later in northern Indiana. Purdue research has shown that these herbicides can be applied as early as March 1 and still be effective all season. It is essential to apply these products early in spring prior to crabgrass germination. Remove any remaining crabgrass prior to application.

Some good preemergence herbicides are:

Benefin

Oxadiazon

Benefin/Trifluralin

Pendimethalin

Dithiopyr

Prodiamine

Some of these may not be available unless you are a professional licensed landscaper/farmer. Follow directions on the label. You may need to carefully remove the berry plant prior to application, and then replant them. Some of them are safe to use as long as the plants are still dormant.
Reply:Crabgrass dies off during the winter. Use a pre-emergent anti- crab grass treatment in spring after pulling out dead crab grass.

After spring keep weeding.
Reply:Pull it out. Crabgrass is tough to get out of lawn, I do know that. What I've done in the past is spray 1 1/2 ounces of Round-Up per gallon of water directly onto the weed without hitting the primary grass. And that's if it's in big patches. I live in Florida and crabgrass is a big problem down here. I'm sure you don't want to run the risk of killing your patch by spraying chemicals on it. I've sprayed MANAGE on crabgrass a few times and that will knock it out in 2-3 applications. MANAGE is real expensive and would probably kill your patch. I'd pull it if I were you.
Reply:If your strawberry plants are dormant, you can actually (gently) uproot them, taking care not to damage the main root structure, separate out the weeds (Bermuda grass is a predominant pest in my area, with pervasive roots), sift the soil (if you have deep rooting weeds), and replant. This would also be a good time to amend the soil. Strawberries are often sold as bare root cultivars, and seem actually to like being transplanted after a while.

I tried this in my garden plot last year, and the plants remained very healthy. Also, it's organic! Good luck! However, I would only try this in winter, not during any growing / fruiting season.
