This will be for a potluck dinner. I wanted to know if I can cube Angel Food Cake and then layer Strawberries ( that have sugar on them) then layer whip cream and make several layers in a glass pedestal bowl? Will this all run together and be unattractive? Or will the layers hold? Thanks in advance.
Need help with Strawberry Shortcake for a crowd?
we usually use the cool whip type stuff or real whip cream (that you beat from the liquid) bc the stuff in the spray bottle doesn't seem to hold as well for as long, but yes, it is delicious, and the trifle can be made with any type of berries! Enjoy!!
Reply:Here's a recipe i make for Strawberry Trifle, which is a wonderful dessert for a crowd:
2 quarts fresh strawberries, stemmed and sliced, add 1/2 cup sugar and mash slightly to create juice
1 angel food cake, or 1 large frozen poundcake defrosted
1 large package instant vanilla pudding, plus 2 cups milk
1 large container CoolWhip
Make pudding with milk and fold in 1 cup coolwhip. Refrigerate. Tear cake into pieces and layer: 1/3 cake, 1/3 strawberries, 1/3 pudding, repeat ending with strawberries. Top with coolwhip and refrigerate until serving.
Reply:Strawberry Shortcake
INGREDIENTS
* 3 pints fresh strawberries
* 1/2 cup white sugar
* 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
* 4 teaspoons baking powder
* 2 tablespoons white sugar
* 1/4 teaspoon salt
* 1/3 cup shortening
* 1 egg
* 2/3 cup milk
* 2 cups whipped heavy cream
DIRECTIONS
1. Slice the strawberries and toss them with 1/2 cup of white sugar. Set aside.
2. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C). Grease and flour one 8 inch round cake pan.
3. In a medium bowl combine the flour, baking powder, 2 tablespoons white sugar and the salt. With a pastry blender cut in the shortening until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Make a well in the center and add the beaten egg and milk. Stir until just combined.
4. Spread the batter into the prepared pan. Bake at 425 degrees F (220 degrees C) for 15 to 20 minutes or until golden brown. Let cool partially in pan on wire rack.
5. Slice partially cooled cake in half, making two layers. Place half of the strawberries on one layer and top with the other layer. Top with remaining strawberries and cover with the whipped cream.

Reply:That sounds like a good way of doing it. However the strawberry mixture with the sugar will be very wet, so no matter how you make it, it's all going to mush together. The standard way of making it is to make biscuits from bisquick. I know what you mean, you want the layers to look pretty, but I guess if you don't make the strawberry mixture too wet and only use a little, you can achieve that...but the best tasting strawberry shortcake is with as much as possible in my opinion.
Reply:What you have just described is called "Strawberry Triffle", and it is beautiful + delicious. It will hold in the fridge for 3 or 4 hours.
Reply:If you don't put any sugar on the strawberries,they won't get so "wet" juicy.
Your idea is good and will look pretty.You can also cube up plain white cake and get the same result.
Reply:Try twikies instead of angel food cake. You will be surprised how everyone keeps asking for more!
Reply:yes. that sounds fine
