Deciduous shrub native to the eastern US. tough, leathery dark green leaves that turn yellow in autumn. Puts out a plentiful crop of scarlet fruits that open to show orange seeds. Early settlers discovered native americans often used the bitter juice to mix with cures for many ills. It was also used as a native red die for clothing warn by tribal cheifs.

Today its used for landscape in shady, woodland settings. The orange seed are a winter food for birds and small critters.

Yes, you can eat them if you are into bitter small fruit %26amp; like having a red tongue.
Reply:Well they look similar to strawberries but I don't believe that they are edible.
Reply:If your talking about Arbutus unedo, then yes you can eat them. I've tasted them once and that was enough for me.
