According to the Portugese this tree doesn't grow in this country. Mine is now about 15 ft tall and won't stop growing!
When is it best to prune my 'strawberry tree'?
I think you are referring to "Arbutus unedo" which is commonly known as a strawberry tree because of the appearance of the fruit. Depending on the variety, it can grow up to 35 feet high, so yours might not even be halfway to its full size! You can prune off any basal suckers or stem sprouts that grow straight up whenever they begin growth. Any major pruning would be best done during the winter dormancy period. You can thin out branches to create an open-crowned tree, which won't create as much shade and may make for an overall healthier tree. But heading back (just cutting all the branches back) is not a great solution, because it causes lots of weak new branches to spring out of the headed-back stumps. So during the winter dormancy, you might try pruning off selected branches to get a better shape. And go slow - take on this project of reducing the size of your tree gradually, so that you don't shock it.
Reply:I don't think you're supposed to prune them. I have one too and I'd like to know the answer to this question. If they can be pruned, I'd imagine now would be about the right time to do so.
