How long after planting strawberry plants do you start to see obvious signs of growth?
Strawberrys are everyones favoutite fruit whether eaten fresh or in jam, they will grow in most climates as long as they haveenough sun and moisture. They are very easily managed and will take up little space in the garden, and they will bear fruit in less than a year after planting. They are perenial plants that grow to about 8 in high and increce by runners that form plantlets at the ends of the runners. The two -to three week season of the summer - fruiting varietys or the June bearers is all to short but can be extended by planting bothearly and late types or planting the so called perpetual, everbearing or remonant types, which fruit in early summer and again in autum with the odd berry or two in between. With good management it is posible to have a good crop of strawberry for 6 months of the year or more.

Coose a sunny spot for planting with little or no shade at all, is freely drained and free from perenial weeds, and preferibly was well manured. Avoid planting where potatos, rasberies ,melons or chrysanthimums previously grew as there is a strong chance that these might have carried eelworm or other soil pests and diseases. Dig 2 or 3 weeks before planting adding 35g/m of sulphate of potash and superphosphate, but no nitrogenous fertilizer as virus free plants do not need it and would grow leaves at the expnce of fruit.

In spring hoe regulary to kill anuual weeds, conserve moisture by mulching between rows with a layer of peat and top that with a thin layer of straw to keep frost and slugs away from the plants. Water plants well when the berrys are swelling, the berrys must now be protected from birds by draiping a net over the top of the plants. Also be sure to use slug pellets to combat any slugs that manage to climb the layer of straw.

Pick the fruits gently pick them without the calyx (the ring of leaves and stock). After harvesting cut back the dying leaves and lift the straw not forgeting rotten fruit as this will spread and encourage deasese. Leave only strong plants to reform a new bed, replaceing weaklings with new plants grown from the runners.

Enjoy your strawberrys.

Reply:With good watering and warm temps you should notice good growth within 3 weeks.
Reply:whithin a week
Reply:All the answers above are great but I need to add to them that you don't want to many runners. I leave five on each plant %26amp; only let each make one plant. Do this until you get as many plants as you want %26amp; then only let one runner grow from each plant. If you let two many run from the plant it will cut down on your fruit %26amp; kill the main plant.

Good luck %26amp; good eating.
Reply:What you could try to stimulate them by adding pine needkes, some cones or pine bark chips to the ground, covering the ground with them and giving them a good watering. They love the acidity.
Reply:they first have to adjust to their new planting site but in two to three weeks they should start to show providing temperatures are sufficient for new growth to develop. If these are what are known as June bearing then pull flowers the first year and a better plant will develop for next year. Or if you do not mind a smaller plant enjoy the fruit the first year.
