It gives the plants an extra growing season to get well-established. If they fruit, it won't be abundant.

Reply:It depends if the plants are actually first year plants or not. If you bought them live they may already be in their second season. Of coures if you planted seed yourself you need to remove the blooms.
Reply:I don't know that it is necessary, but it is common practice in order to give the plants a chance to become established instead of putting energy into producing fruit.
