I rubbed a cut strawberry on my grandsons lips .. and was told this was dangerous .. Have I missed something in life... Is this true?
Is it dangerous to give a 4 month old baby a taste of a Strawberry?
Giving him a little taste isn't really dangerous... if he were allergic that wouldn't cause enough of a reaction to hospitalize or kill him. It is now recommended to not feed a lot of food to babies before they are a year old because their G I tract is not fully developed and so being introduced to food prematurely can cause allergies... only baby food should be introduced. I also feed fruits and veggies and crackers but I stay away from anything dairy or anything with nuts or a lot of seeds because those are the foods that are more likely to become allergies. Hope that answered your question.
Reply:If this is the child's first taste of a solid, I would avoid strawberries. Start with some more "neutral" such as bananas. One thing I have found is that starting a child on vegetables is better in the long run. I started my daughter on veges and now she rather eat them over cookies and other high sugar items.

If your child has had other solid with no troubles, she should do fine. Has she has any tomato products? If she/he had problems with tomatoes, there is a higher likelihood they MIGHT have problems with strawberries. Do you have any food allergies? Any family allergies to strawberries?

One important thing. As you introduce her/him to new foods, only add "that" food. In this manner, if they should have problems, you will know what food caused the problem.

If you still have concerns, call your child's doctor. All mom's have concerns like this. That is why they are a pediatrician, you are not bothering them!!

Good luck and God Bless.
Reply:only if they are allergic to it. as long as you smash it good.
Reply:It could be that he could have an allergic reaction, and at that age he would have no way to tell you like say if is throat is swelling to the point he can't breathe. Things like strawberries, nuts (foods where people commonly have allergic reactions to), I would say hold off on the tasting. But I gave my nephew a drop of fruit punch when he was 5mths (six yrs now) and he was fine. He cried because he wanted more, but other than that he was and is fine. He goes to school for the intellectually gifted. No sickness, illnesses, nothing. Hope this helps.
Reply:I think giving the baby a taste of the strawberry is just fine. What I think is wrong is giving the baby formula...where on earth is formula grown??? Hmmmm strawberries fresh grown strawberries what could be more natural? Maybe breast milk over formula think about that! I bet the baby is CUTE!!!
Reply:Strawberries are a high allergy food, and introducing them too early can trigger an allergy. As long as he didn't react (hives, troubles breathing, anything like that) he'll be ok, but wait until he's a year old before giving them again. Same with cow's milk, eggs, honey, peanut butter, shellfish and citrus fruits.
Reply:Yes, they can be allergic to them. The first reaction if there is one would not be very strong, however subsequent exposure would be. Besides that a baby should not be eating anything but formula or breast milk until they are 6 months of age. At 6 months solids can be introduced. There are several websites that can assists you with what foods are ok to start with.
Reply:Strawberries are a very common allergy and common allergy items like strawberries and nuts should NOT be exposed to a child until at least past 8 months usuaully when signs are more noticeable and less dangerous. My daughter ate some plain yogurt and I thought non of the fruit (which was in the bottom) got on the spoon but it did. She broke out in a head to toe rash that blistered, had a fever of 102 and her face swelled. She is allergic to strawberries! Doctor's recommend things for a reason and if I hadn't taken her to the ER she might have died.
Reply:they prefer u not introduce a baby to strawberries until they have reached stage 3 baby foods because one of the things a lot of children end up allergic to is strawberries
Reply:Yes, he should have nothing but formula.
Reply:Not a good idea, strawberries are one of the foods that people can be allergic to. It may not be dangerous to only have a taste, but the baby won't understand what he's tasting anyway. He really only needs breast milk or formula at this age, and you should check with the doctor for anything else. Usually babies start out on rice cereal as their first solid food; it's easy for them to digest, and they have to learn how to chew and swallow after only sucking for the first few months of their lives.
Reply:Its just that there are so many allergies. My son was allergic to peanut, eggs, soy, beans, and peas, Found out at one when I gave him peanut butter, eggs and beans to try, Becareful. Watch for hives, breathing, white tounge
Reply:If its just the juice its fine...studies have been made that strawberries are the biggest for allergies. Its not really dangerous, but don't give it dolid pieces. My Dad used to give my son licks of chocolate. Its not going to kill them.
Reply:I know many people who are allergic to strawberries so that is their concern. If you had used a banana it would have been more acceptable.
Reply:I've heard that it is dangerous for babies under 1 year to have any contact (eating, or tasting) strawberries. I don't know why, or what can happen, but many doctors have told me to keep the strawberries away until the first birthday.
Reply:You really don't want to give such a small baby anything solid. And strawberries are supposedly very acidic... I wouldn't do it again. Just keep an eye on the baby.
Reply:no there is nothing wrong with it
Reply:Strawberries cause an allergic reaction in some people that can cause the throat to swell up and breathing to stop. A child of this age has no chance of coping if he was to have such a reaction, so it'e best to hold off with foods like that until later in life.
Reply:I'm not certain of any health risks, other than the baby might be allergic to it. I'd have to look it up. I would think that it's fine as long as it's just rubbed, no chunks of strawberry since the infant can't eat solids yet.
Reply:Strawberries are a common allergen.

And babies shouldn't have solids foods before around 6 mos of age.
Reply:no just give the baby a taste of the strawberry
