I saw someone with a large (garbage can size) plastic barrel with holes in the sides (where the strawberry plants grow). Then they put a PVC type pipe with holes in the middle for proper drainage. The dirt goes around the middle pipe.
Does anyone have these instructions - is there anymore I need to know to grow wonderful strawberries?
Need Strawberry growing barrel bucket instructions?
The site Joyce S recommends is great to review- for example deciding what type of strawberry plants to buy.
Another helpful site to review is an article written by John Vivian in Mother Earth News (see link below)
I will be modifying these instructions with information from the Virginia Cooperative Extension site (see link below) regarding hole spacing. In addition I will be putting drip irrigation line up through the middle pipe but I still have to figure out emitter locations and spacing within the drum.
Reply:I found good growing instructions that really helped me here - http://www.doityourself.com/stry/growstr...
Reply:The key to plump juicy strawberries is water! I think the PVC type pipe in the middle is for watering purposes. We have a similar strawberry pot and it works great. Other than that I think all you need to do is keep an eye out for pests and birds.
Birds get most of ours :-D
