Can anyone help me with a strawberry plant?

I was recently given a strawberry plant in a small container from a garden center. I am not sure what type it is or where to put it. I live in New Mexico, and i would like to be able to grow it in a container. It currently has one white flower and several developing fruits. I would like to know what type of soil i need, how much to water, what type of container to grow it in, etc.

Sounds like you are off to a great start. What a nice friend to give you such a gift. Many retailers (home depot, lowes, target etc) will sell strawberry pots. Usually ceramic with multiple holes in them. Your plant will send out runners that you can train into the other holes of the pot or you may purchase more plants (larger crop this way) Full sun, water completely when dry and you will have some yummy berries to snack on. Thanks for saving the planet(one plant at a time makes a difference)
Reply:I know that there is a chemical level in soil that will help the plant produce sweeter strawberries.....also there are strawberry pots, since strawberry plants procreate and make new little plants, I believe it has several openings so that new plants and more fruit will come forth. Ask at your local garden center about the type of soil that will help produce the sweetest fruit. The first time I grew strawberries in my garden they were awfully bitter....so I am looking into this myself this year. Good luck!
Reply:I have been growing strawberries in an unglazed ceramic pot for years.

Regular potting soil, regular watering and liquid fertilizer late winter and early spring (I live in area without frost).

They are pretty hardy and forgiving if you forget to water.
Reply:Strawberries are easy to grow. You can go to Home Depot and get a bag of soil and a large planter. It will do fine.
